Is chocolate toxic to dogs?

I've certainly heard this. But every single year, our family dog- a golden retriever- would get at the Halloween candy and wolf it down. Every year. She never got sick. What's the story?

You've been lucky. I suggest you read the information about toxicity of the alkaloid, theobromine. It appears that for a larger dog like yours, she would need to ingest nearly a pound of chocolate to get a fatal dose. Knowing how dangerous it is for dogs, cats, and birds, we should be vigilant and not allow our pets to eat any of it.

I was camping with my mom's dog. When the kids left the campfire unattended, including the smore fixings, the dog (yellow lab) ate an entire box of Hersey bars. The 12 pack of full size bars. He also ate all the packaging, but that isn't the issue. My mom, convinced the dog was going to die, actually called a vet. The vet told us chocolate simply revs up the dog just like it does humans. If the dog eats enough chocolate they can get revved up so much have a doggy heart attack. They said you will know because the dog seems agitated and hyper. We all looked at the dog who was in the middle of a nice nap, looking as peaceful as ever.

Yes, it's toxic in large doses / regular daily feedings.

    So are onions, oddly enough.

I think dogs can build up a tolerance to it, not that I'm advocating letting your dog eat chocolate.

My childhood dog got into chocolate many times. The last few years of his life, chocolate ingestion stopped making him puke. He even gobbled up half a box of chocolates once, and nothing.
