Caily emailed us at feedback@questionland.com and was answered by email, but since we get this request once in a while I thought it was worth answering publicly in general (the reasons for removing an account may vary so I'm just dealing with the most common situation).
Cagey was wondering whynsomeone would want to remove their account and wondered if it was because someone hacked it. We've never encountered a hacked account. The reason is typically that the person logged in with facebook and decided to use their real name when posting. At some later date they Googled their name and found that Questionland was one of the top ranking results for their name. Sometimes people don't like this because they may have posted something they would prefer was not so visiblly associated with them.
We do warn people quite strongly when theynlog in with facebook that they can change their name so their posts remain anonymous.
The typical reaction to the problem above is to want to remove the account and expunge everything. The better approach is simply to request that we change your username so that the content is made anonymous and not associated with your name.
Once Google has indexed it under your name the results will be their for a little while until the index is updated, but if we change your name the index will probably change faster because it has a new thing to index rather than than an outdated link. Either way Questionalnd is reindexed much faster than most sites so it should be a short term thing. It's also worth remembering that Google customizes your results so what you are seeing may not be the same as wha others see. Questionland is more likely to rank higher for you since you have visited the site.
As far as deleting accounts go, we have no problem doing that if you emails us. We can't delete content when other people have contributed to it. So if you asked a question and other people took then trouble to answer it, we can't delete the quesion in fairness to them. We can change the username associated with the question.
This is why there is no option to just delete your own account. Most content in Questionland is the combined effort of the community and thus asking us to delete contrubutions is basically asking us to remove the efforts of others. Many sites allow you to delete your account but neglect to mention that they are not removing your contributions. That seemed misleading so instead we get you to email us so we can address the underlying reason for removing an account.
So if you have an issue just email us at feedback@questionland.com and tell us what the actual issue is and we will do our best to fix it for you right away.
If you are using your real name to post and think it might be better to change that then just email us and tell us what your current name is and what you'd like it changed to. We will change it in a jiffy.
That was long-winded but we'd like to make sure everyone benefits from Questionland without suffering any unintended consequences that are increasingly common in the electronic world.
