Ridgeway picked many of his victims up off of Pacific Highway South, aka Highway 99, down by the airport, just south of Seattle proper. The bodies were mostly dumped in or near the river in Kent, where there is a series of parks and undeveloped land along it.

The river is now just the upper part of the Duwamish, which empties into Elliott Bay at Harbor Island under the West Seattle Bridge, though it used to empty into Lake Washington at Renton before a series of confusing natural and manmade changes that dried up the Black River and diverted the White River a hundred years ago.

So, yeah, extremely local. Coming on top of the much creepier Ted Bundy murders (Ridgeway was and is an unusually stupid man; his crimes were brutal, not creepy) it's no wonder that Seattle has a bit of a complex about serial killers.

Is this a serious question? The Green River Killer was Gary Ridgeway, a serial killer named for the location of the remains of his first known victims, discovered in the 1980s.

The Green River is a river running from Lester, WA on the west side of the Cascade Mtns, through the Howard Hanson Reservoir, Maple Valley, Auburn and Tukwila up to Elliott Bay in south Seattle.

The Green River is the river that runs two blocks east of my house. The deal with the Green River Killer is that he was another stupid sociopath who preyed on sex workers because they were easy to pick up and no one in particular went looking for them.

*seinfeld voice* "I mean, what does he have against the effervescent green soda, anyway? It's delicious, quaint, uniquely colored. Why must he be so negative?!? Right?"

Real A: The 'green river killer', like many serial killer names, is a little inaccurate. Some victims once labelled "green river killer victims" weren't, apparently, killed by Gary Ridgeway. Many more victims than the law knew about were killed by Gary. Many of Gary's victims were found no where near the green river, but yet the label/title stuck. Score one for fear, I guess.

& Green river is down south and east, in the Auburn/Kent area.

FYI : further upstream, the green river gorge is by Flaming Geyser State Park - further yet, it nears Stampede Pass (the pass south of Snoqualmie Pass/I-90).
