Is George Soros trying to destroy the American dollar?

I'm a daily news reader and tend to get my info from KUOW, the NY Times, a few blogs, including SLOG and a few video streams as I don't have cable TV. I am firmly left-leaning and I have heard Glenn Beck's show a few times, but I am totally naive about this George Soros character. Talking with my dad yesterday, he gave me a passionate earful about this Soros and how the American economy can be undone by the guy. Though my dad is an unabashed FOX News junkie, I take his perspective with a grain of salt and make a note to myself to do a little research of my own. To my surprise, though, the first news item I see on SLOG today is about Beck's "Fascist" rant about Soros, painting Beck as a reckless anti-Semite. Yikes.
What's the story here? What do I need to know about George Soros and what should I tell my old man before he runs his mouth off and starts looking like a Jew hater (which he is not)?

According to some, he was out to wreck the east asian economies...
Yet another group claims he's anti-serbian.
And the Beck-erheads believe he's a former nazi collaborator (even if it were true, he wasn't older than 14 at the end of the nazi regime - the truth is: he was ordered by nazi occupiers to hand out flyers to jews to attend 'meetings' and agreed, but instead informed his fellow jews it was a ruse and they'd be deported if they showed up).
AND his nickname to some is 'the man who broke the bank of england'.

On the other hand, he personally donated over $1million to try and get marijuana legalized; he spent 25.5 million bucks against GW in 2004; his foundation/charity, Open Society Institute, spends $600 million, per year, opening people's minds to progressive ideology in nations across the world; his financial contribution to Hungary's dumping of Communism in 1989 is considered significant; and he's also considered crucially responsible for the Rose Revolution.

He's also been convicted of insider trading and has owned a stake in the Carlyle Group (through which GW Bush and Bin laden are famously linked).

I think perhaps he's neither truly progressive nor occasional neocon. He's simply a very shrewd profit-maker who plays whatever side will line his pocket.

Ignore your dad. Seriously, if you can't tell him he's an idiot, then just let him ramble on and pay him no mind.

Beck's vendetta against Soros is not new, and it is absolutely anti-Semitic, whatever Beck says about it. But Beck's primary motivation is, as always, THE CRAZY. He uses an emotional appeal to patriotism that is utterly divorced from the facts.

Soros is an advocate of government regulation of the financial industry, which is a threat to Beck's gold-trading scams. Remember this: Beck is not just a loon, he's a crook.

The most recent attacks are motivated by Soros's public remarks in favor of a weaker dollar. Beck is making an emotional appeal here to naive people who don't understand how exchange rates work, and assume that a weak dollar means America is weak. Few legitimate economists would agree. There are significant benefits to a weaker dollar. Beck is full of shit, in other words.

I think that it is WONDERFUL that you are doing research on a subject that you are not familiar with.

I wish that more people would do this. It is great to have information based on facts when having a rational conversation.

It sounds like you would like to have an informed discussion with your father and EDUCATE him rather than just write him off as an "idiot" or a "crazy."

Perhaps if you did not have an discussion with your dad then he would just go on believing what HE hears on FOX NEWS and spread those opinions on to others that are not as willing or educated to research the subject for themselves.

I guess what I'm saying is...why IGNORE this. Why write off anyone that we encounter that doesn't have the same opinions, beliefs, or morals as us? What good are we doing by walking away?

Good for you for your quest for information, knowledge, understanding, and keeping level headed. Calling names, throwing around insults, and being apathetic never got ANYONE anywhere as far as I'm concerned.

if a person plays the race card on someone giving information take their advice comes from the other camp and is just as one sided. especially when they have to talk trash about your dad. The more stereotypes they pull, the less logical they are. being agaisnt George soros and his tendancy to destroy markets does not make someone anti semitic. Personally, if soros did want to slam our economy I think he would wait till january. and I have issue with the forecast. People hype one direction when they think it will go the other. also, if Beck has gold, then he would support a weaker dollar.

I find it offensive that most of these answers only criticize Fox news, and do not answer any of your questions. Maybe you people should quit being so vitriol, and LISTEN to what these people say when they are talking on, and off camera.

It is widely known that George Soros is known as "The Man who broke the Bank of England." Black Wednesday source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Wednesday You can look stuff up further. While I link a Wikipedia link, I am hoping that you will do further research, other than just Wikipedia. Some people believe that he did this to align the currencies in Europe to make a single economy for all the countries of Europe. We have the EU now, all of those countries are now tied. Was this his vision?

Other people have said that he was the man who drove down the currency in Malaysia, however, according to the Malaysian Premier, he said that Mr. Soros did not do this.
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200612/s1812946.htm

He has stated in an interview in 1999 (I believe,) that talked about his childhood. He stated himself, that his father gave him to the Nazis to ensure his safety as a child. At the age of 14, he followed what was then considered "Nazi collectors." These were the people who would confiscate possessions from the Jewish people. He stated during that interview that "1944 was the best year of my life." At the age of 14, he was in one of the enlightening stages in life (as I would hope most of us are.) His enlightening stage involved him following around people collecting other peoples property because they were Jewish.

He stated in an interview in that he believes in an Open Society. His view of this is a One World Government. He actually stuttered during his interview trying to say "New World Order" because he understands how uncomfortable the majority of Americans would be with this. He actually stuttered saying New two times before he blurted out "World Order" in quick succession. He says that the US Dollar needs to have an "Orderly decline" to align the US with the rest of the world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz8L6hyZngI

Here is an interview clip where he talks about toppling economies of the world, and how much "Fun" it is. I don't know about you, but if someone is able to topple governments because he feels they are wrong, then he needs to go away in some form. I certainly don't want someone being able to change my life, unless it is me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuQ-wQZDpg4&feature=related

Now I ask you, just from these examples, is this a man that you would trust to do your bidding in life because you are too busy to keep up for yourself? Do you trust that this man will not try and do here in America with our dollar what he did in England, or other countries? If he does, or is doing this, are you comfortable with what his vision is, and is it the same as your vision?

The story is you need to stop thinking about or paying attention to anything related to Fox News or anyone who takes it seriously.

Sorry to break it to you, your dad is an idiot. And it's sounding like the apple didn't fall too far from the tree...
