I absolutely loved the Frances books by Russell Hoban at that age. (Bedtime for Frances, Best Friends for Frances, and especially A Birthday for Frances.) The main character is a pretty cute badger who sings adorable songs. Example:

Frances was in the broom closet, singing:
    Happy Thursday to you
    Happy Thursday to you
    Happy Thursday Dear Alice
    Happy Thursday to you

    "Who is Alice?" asked Mother.
"Alice is somebody that nobody can see," said Frances. "And that is why she does not have a birthday. So I am singing Happy Thursday to her."
    "Today is Friday," said Mother.
"It is Thursday for Alice," said Frances. "Alice will not have h-r-n-d, and she will not have g-k-l-s. But we are singing together."
"What are h-r-n-d and g-k-l-s?" asked Mother.
"Cake and candy. I thought you could spell." said Frances.
"I am sure that Alice will have cake and candy on her birthday," said Mother.
"But Alice does not have a birthday," said Frances.
"Yes, she does," said Mother. "Even if nobody can see her, Alice has one birthday every year, and so do you. Your birthday is two months from now. Then you will be the birthday girl. But tomorrow is Gloria's birthday, and she will be the birthday girl."
"That's how it is, Alice," said Frances. "Your birthday is always the one that is not now."

    What's not to love?!

He might be a tad young for it, but Jame Guerney's Dinotopia is excellent. The story is cool and easy to follow, the pictures are spellbinding, and he'll love that book for life...it's not a book limited to a certain age group. Two good sequels too.

Questionland is full of awesome aunts and uncles. How great that you're looking for books for your nephew!

The Johnny Mutton series is one of my very favorite easy readers.  These books are laid out like comic books, and they are hilarious. They feature a confident, good-natured sheep in little boy's clothing who enters cooking contests, builds robots, and attends birthday parties.  I'd start with Johnny Mutton:  He's So Him!

Then of course, there's the ever popular Captain Underpants easy reader series, which might already be a favorite with your nephew.  Also a sort of comic book for the younger set, these books feature the hero saving the day from villains like Professor Pippy P. Poopypants.

Your nephew would probably also still enjoy some picture books.  For a boy his age, I'd pick one that's slightly twisted, like I'd Really Like To Eat a Child. A young crocodile insists that he won't eat any food except for a child--but then he meets a young girl who puts him in his place.

Along those same lines, you might try Beware of the Frog. Sweet old Mrs. Collywobbles lives on the edge of a big, dark, scary wood, but has a pet frog to protect her from greedy goblins, smelly trolls, and hungry ogres.  Great surprise ending!

There are plenty of great truck books out there.  I like Truckery Rhymes, which hilariously changes the words of classic nursery rhymes so that they become truck-centric.  And if he doesn't already have it, no child should be without Richard Scarry's classic Cars and Trucks and Things That Go--hours and hours of entertainment.

Good dinosaur books also abound.  I'm a big fan of T is for Terrible, in which a tyrannosaurus rex explains that he cannot help it that he is enormous and hungry and is not a vegetarian.  Jane Yolen also has a great series of dinosaur books for this age group.

I hope this is helpful.  Let me know if you have questions about any of these, and happy shopping!

    Cheers,

    Hayden

Mike, why not turn this into a special occasion for you and your nephew. For the birthday a card and a gift of you and him going to his favorite bookstore (or yours) to purchase the book of his choice. Optional lunch before or after. What book lover doesn't love the bookstore? Then you'll get some great ideas from him for Christmas,

My favorite book to recommend to children that love dinosaurs is When Dinosaurs came with Everything by Elise Broach and illustrated by a Caldecott winner David Small. Its a picture book, but still has enough text to be a good challenge for young readers. The story is about a young boy running errands with his mom. He's not really enjoying the experience, but then he gets a dinosaur for every errand. Charming, funny, and sure to become a favorite.

If he's truly a young one who loves to read: "How to train your dragon" is a perfect fit. Dragons, Dinosaurs; vikings, trucks; ...meh! close enough!

Here are some suggestions for your nephew:

-Tractors & Trucks Stencil Book by Usborne. This book describes what different trucks and tractors can do plus chunky stencils he can use to trace and color is own truck and tractor fleet.

-The Trucktown series by Jon Scieska. There are both illustrated books and early readers in this series with wonderful illustrations by David Shannon, Loren Long & David Gordon.

Dinosaur with clip art by Eyewitness is filled with facts and great pictures of dinosaurs. Some of the text may be too difficult but he will love all of the pictures and he can read parts and have someone read the other sections.

The Dinosaur Cove series is about to young boys who discover an entrance to a prehistoric world. Perfect for young readers.

The Ultimate Guide to Dinosaurs by Dougal Dixon is like a large field guide of dinsaurs. Filled with lots of easy to read facts and pictures.

Dinosaurs Eye To Eye by DK filled with facts and great illustrations will keep him busy for hours.

Enclyclopedia Brown Boy Detective series by Donald J. Sobol is a lot of fun.

Three Tales of My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett is a wonderful classic about a boy's father's adventure with a dragon complete with a great map inside the cover.
