What do I do when I've been the victim of a hit and run?

My motorcycle was knocked over by a BMW Z5, which is currently parked right in front of my bike. They pulled my bike up and left, without a note, but my roommates saw and told me. I called the police who gave me a case number and told me that there isn't anything they can do because they don't know who was driving.

Was your bike damaged in any way?

If so, look into small claims court. Take pictures of the BMW and your bike in its current position. Get a picture of the plates on the BMW. See if anyone else saw it.

If there is damage you can probably get the money from them through court.

You can also leave a message on the BMW and tell them that someone told you what happened and that you filed a report with the police. They may be willing to contact you and pay for any damages. You could also politely say that you have pictures of their plates, and are willing to go to small claims court.

Up to you how threatening you really wanna be about it.

The 'they don't know who was driving' line stinks of BS on the part of the police. I've called for hit and run before, as the MF sped away (but I got their plate # too), and a few weeks later, their sorry ass landed in court. Maybe Call the police back after the car leaves, and say you'd like to press charges the car drove away but you got the plate.

optional: Mention they may have been drunk / may have had a weapon - for faster reponse.

Otherwise, Basil's answer is reasonable, right and shroomeriffic
