    a weeks worth, you mean?
You will probably have to go with dry food. Is a lot cheaper.
Alt, borrow some from a friendly cat owning neighbor with a promise to reimburse as soon as you get some $ again.

(re-posting my earlier comment as an answer)

Are you looking to spend $4.00 on just the cat or is the $4.00 for you and the cat?

If just the cat, then $4.00 could easily buy you 3.5 pounds of regular cat food for that would last for weeks. I don't know what you consider to be "complete crap" cat food, but if you have close to zero money, then you can't really be turning your nose up at food that isn't some hoity toity $40/bag food.

There are also groups that provide pet food to low-income people, so if you qualify for that you may want to look into that route. For example: http://www.seattlehumane.org/services/services/lowincome-senior

In the worst case scenario, assuming your cat healthy, the cat can likely go awhile with little or no food. It may cause the cat to meow lots, but it shouldn't kill him/her. (I'm not a vet though, and be sure to provide ample water.)

(And as ozchick said, consider borrowing some food from a cat-owning neighbor.)

What do you typically feed this cat, btw? Moist food? Dry food? What brand? How old is the cat? How much does the cat usually eat? Is the cat healthy/skinny/fat/cute?

At Mud Bay, there is a whole wall of cat and dog food samples behind the check-out register. You can ask for lots of different samples to "see which one Kitty likes best."

Canned tuna or boiled chicken! (pull the chicken apart so he can eat it.) They love it!

Sometimes the local food banks have pet food.

If you make a trip to your local pet store, you will find small sample sizes of dry food that cost around two or three dollars. They typically last for about a week of twice daily feedings. I use them every now and then to see how my cat will respond.
