Has anyone here worked a canvassing job? How was it?

Might accept a canvassing job offer. I've been unemployed for 2 months. Is it worth it (being rejected by tons of strangers, standing out in the rain in a vest with a clipboard, working from noon to 10 pm, working at a base rate and earning commissions, being called human spam by the Slog)?

I worked at a nonprofit that will remain unnamed (Nader-founded, cough cough), and I lasted about two months before I realized I had to quit before I started a hard drug habit to make it though a day.

Do you mind people offering you jobs stripping or money for sex? Do you mind being chased down by irate strangers in SUVs, only to be yelled at that you're a fucking communist who wants to take money out of their childrens' mouths? DO you mind realizing after two weeks that NOBODY makes above the base rate? Do you mind getting your ass chewed out when you get sent to a poor area with directions to get $350 in contributions and you return with $50? Do you mind creepy dudes? Sunburns? Rarely-accessible bathrooms while you canvass? No lunch breaks while you canvass (unless you take one, and even then there's a chance you'll get caught and yelled at)?

If you can handle it, go to town. I made it two months and hated humanity.

human spam, lady. or street spam. your pick.

it sucks b/c the cause it usually noble and rational and the canvassers are usually really polite and genuine. it's a lose/ lose, unless you're a masochist.

I once worked for the US Census in 1990... I did a bit of what you're describing, except I had to drive to find particular addresses and check to see if they were still inhabited. Boy, can people be mean when they don't want their government to find them.
Unfortunately, I was the guy would spot checked the field workers right below me.
As a result, when the first guy was chased off their land, I was the second one to come calling. Some people were VERY threatening.

It pays to be nice and courteous!

I personally worked on different canvassing jobs for 5 years. I have to tell you it gets you no where. And may even hurt future employment opportunities. By that I mean, You can't get promoted when you canvass because it's like a slavery job as you mentioned. The boss will do whatever he/she wants with you. It may hurt your employment record because canvassing is NOT a permanent job. It can leave gaps on your employment record. That is not good for employers who look at work history. Not many employers will take canvassing as experience at all. Not even sales people. Canvassing is just a way of exploiting people for money or votes. I think you are better than that. Avoid it.

i took a job of this nature once in total unemployed desperation. i made it about an hour before i had to give up. but, it was a bad fit for me. if you don't mind approaching and talking to strangers, being rejected constantly or whatever elements nature throws at you i say go for it. even if you only make it for an hour, like me, you'll be able to say you tried.
