Can dogs be out in very cold weather?

It's going to be 20 degrees tomorrow. Is it okay to take my dog out for a long walk in this temperature?

She's a golden doodle with a fairly thick coat.

    You've heard of the Iditarod?

The only thing I'd watch is her paws. Make sure they don't get icy. Make sure she's moving around, too, and not just strolling and panting.

I'm no expert, but based on my experience your dog will regard a few hours in the snow as a highlight of her life. Throw some snowballs at her.

She gets lots of water when she gets home!

They can survive a walk at quite a bit colder than 20 degrees. People take their dogs out at much lower temps in colder portions of the country. She should be fine as long as you don't spray her with a hose and lock her out all night.

Lab/poodle mixes have dense, waterproof, coats and should be fine outside for an hour or so. My tiny little Maltese loves the snow, but I limit snow walks to ten or fifteen minutes and towel dry her when we get home.

She should be fine and if she does get cold you'll know. The one worry would be her pads, my brothers Pitbull Lab had to wear mittens in Alaska or frostbite would set in.

Call me crazy but if your dog used to comparably warmer weather instead of what we have recently been experiencing having them outside in this weather is going to be a bit of a shock and cruel for a long period of time. Your dog will probably be fine for awhile but a long walk? That just sounds questionable.

I suggested to K-9 that he go on a walk with me this morning when it was 15 degrees out and he shot at me with his nose laser.

The answer to your banner would be an unequivocal NO - thinking that you wanted to leave the dog out in the backyard while you were at work. But then I realized one needs to quantify. How cold? What type of breed? And for how long.

A 20-degree walk should be OK for a while. I think an hour at 20-degrees may be too much. Wouldn't want the dog's nose to get frostbitten, and if there's a period of inactivity and/or there's enough wind, that's a possibility.

A long walk? Maybe you should wait for better weather for the long walk and do maybe two or three brief walks instead.
