What was that other file format that was trying to compete with Blu-Ray a few years ago? Did it just disappear like Betamax?

It was a Toshiba format (HD DVD), and Warner Bros. was putting out a few films in that format in addition to the Blu-Ray format, but everyone saw the writing on the wall when Wal-Mart said they'd only carry Blu-Ray (a Sony/Philips format) discs in their stores. The companies that produced HD DVDs (and there were only a few) almost immediately stopped production because if Wal-Mart isn't having it, no one else is going to step up to the plate. Wal-Mart says what goes and what doesn't go in today's market.

This time Sony won. And regardless of the quality of HD DVD (which I understand is pretty wonderful), we all avoided a VHS/Betamax fiasco. So that's a good thing.

HD DVD. Considering the pace of tech now, it's deader than Betamax.
