the Rankin/Bass Island Of Misfit Toys !
    &
    Gremlins
    &
A Christmas Story (You'll shoot your eye out!)
    ...in that order.

    also-
The Santa Clause, if you are high, is a pretty decent no-brainer treat.

    seconded:
A Christmas Carol. The good costume-drama ones, not the assholic Jim Carrey or CGI/animated BS.

I can only take so much It's a Wonderful Life - so I try not to see it too often, but Capra/Stewart is a total FTW combo.

then of course, there's a damp dark spot in my heart for this guy:

Let's start with the obvious ones: "A Christmas Story", and the 1951 "Christmas Carol" with Alistair Sim.

If I had to go with one I would choose "Holiday Inn." I love the dance number with the firecrackers although the black face is problematic.

Probably the stop-motion & animation kids things from the 1970's like Rudolph, Frosty, Baby New Year, etc. Plus Charlie Brown and It's A Wonderful Life.

The classics: A Christmas Story, for sure. And my family always used to watch The Box of Delights, which was a weird '80s BBC miniseries that my mom had taped off of PBS. I doubt it would scream Christmas for anyone else in the world besides my sister and me, but it is intrinsically tied to the holiday for me.

Our new favorite: Hogfather. Also weirdly a BBC miniseries, based on one of my favorite holiday stories by Terry Pratchett. A little dark, but totally awesome!

I would not say no to watching any of these TONIGHT:

Die Hard. "Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho."

    A Muppet Christmas Carol.

I also kind of love While You Were Sleeping, if I'm in a somewhat sappy, rom-com mood.

Santa Clause is a good one from when I was a kid. Ditto Home Alone 1 and 2.

And of course, the ever-classic looping video of a crackly fireplace. I could watch that thing for hours.

For whatever reason (age, Chinese family, WHATEVER), I never really got into the "classic" classics. I've never even seen It's a Wonderful Life, and many of the animated mainstays (Charlie Brown, Rudolph) I don't remember seeing to the end.

My wife's favorite is "The Preachers Wife" with Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston. Oh, I like it too but don't tell anyone.

Also, we always watch "Fiddler on the Roof" with Zero Mostel during Hannukah.

    There are three:

    1) It's a Wonderful Life: Because I'm a sap for genuine sentimentality, and I love most of Capra's work not to mention the GREAT Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. Not an obscure choice, but it continues to be a brilliant annual experience.

2)The Gathering: A 1977 made-for-TV movie with Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton. Always gets me and makes me very glad I have family to be with and that we are all reasonably well (knock wood). Hard to find though. It was out on VHS but not sure if it ever made it to DVD. Won an Emmy as the year's best TV special. Both leads mesmerize me as does the sheer class of this production.

    3) Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol: Not an enormous fan of the Magoo cartoons, but I loved the Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo series where he was placed as an actor in some of the great literary classics, and I adore this. Imagine condensing A Christmas Carol into 53 minutes (and doing it pretty well). Also imagine and hour program having 53 minutes of content! Such was television in 1962. NBC aired this annually for a few years from 1962 on, then it disappeared until video companies needed product. As with all Magoo cartoons, this one has marvelous, inventive voice work. And the hummable score was written by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill (they scored Funny Girl among other things).

    Happy Holidays to you!
