Quiet but non-romantic restaurant north of lake union, please!

i eat out with my parents a lot, but my family is full of hearing-aid-wearers and my boyfriend has pussy ears. this all means the usual din of a busy restaurant is unbearable. finding restaurants that are quieter, tasty, lively, not romantical with entrees around $14 and is tough. suggestions?

places that have worked:
crow
5 spot
cedars
yanni's
senor moose

places that didn't:
volterra (too romantic & not terribly tasty)
bastille (so insanely noisy)
ocho (we are big people. tapas don't cut it.)

Gorgeous George's is my favorite place to go with my family. It's located on 78th & Greenwood and serves Middle Eastern food. Chef George is from Nazareth and makes the best lamb shawarma, "George's Grandma's Chicken" (a whole small chicken big enough to share and available Friday-Sunday), fantastic hummus with lamb, great falafel, an incredible fattoush salad, and delicious lentil soup, among other wonderful dishes. The prices for entrees are higher than $14 apiece, but the portions are huge. Most often, my parents and I order two appetizers and two entrees and split them. And we always have leftovers. The restaurant can get a little noisy on Friday and Saturday nights, but other nights are generally quieter.

emmer & rye on Queen Anne is a great place to go with family as well. It used to be Julia's, so the space couldn't be less romantic and there's little intimacy with the bright lights and other families surrounding you. But, the restaurant is separated into rooms (old house, ya know), so each room's sound is rather self-contained. Also, the menu is extensive and most plates (including apps) are available in small/half portions, for individual ordering, or large portions for sharing. http://www.emmerandrye.com/menu.php

Ray's Cafe works well, especially during the winter and early spring, when fewer people are there. Their menu items for dinner usually hover somewhere in the 11-22 dollar range, so many of the dishes would work within your price range, while others would be a little steeper. The atmosphere is very casual and family-oriented.

Another great choice would be Saltoro, on 140th and Greenwood. Their sea salt chicken is delicious and the prices are moderate.

Taste of India on Roosevelt is my favorite Indian place. I would go on a weeknight or for lunch to guarantee a super quiet dining experience. It's owned by the same people who own Cedar's.

Ah, pussyears. My cat has those. Hard to find an ear doctor willing to treat that condition, ain't it?

5 spot is great, so glad you've found that one.

Perche No pasta y vino: the romantic is only what you bring - I often see business meetings and family gatherings rather than 'date nights'. It's a homey little italian villa type place with a twist, and the owners/chef make you feel like you've been invited over to their place for a night. Good eats too for folks with good appetites.
They're just south/across the street from the Kidd Valley at 50th and Stone.

Some of your issue may just come down to choosing a good night: Fridays nights, like in any joint, are noisier than the rest.

Have you tried the buffet at Araya's on 45th for lunch? It's pretty quiet...definitely non-romantic and since it's buffet you can eat like an American. I also recommend them for dinner, if you're inclined.
