Can I ask three racial stereotype quesitons without everyone going apeshit?

I have three racially-charged questions that I've wanted to ask all year but have been too afraid to ask.

I'd like to preface this with the fact that I AM NOT A RACIST, I'm just a friendly white guy who honestly would like to know the answers to the following:

1) Why do Asians always post pictures of food on facebook?

2) Why do Mexicans all have like 3 last names?

3) Why do Black people jaywalk so much?

Answer this question or share it with a smart friend:

The answer to 2 is that it is customary in Spanish speaking countries to give children the surnames of both parents. The first of the two surnames is the father's name, and the latter is the mother's. The second one is often dropped.

The other two questions involve strangely particular observations that could actually be made about any group, but because you've decided that the trait belongs to a particular group, your human predisposition to noticing things that confirm your biases convinces you that the observations are empirically valid.

Now, my question: Why do white people always say racist shit right after saying "I AM NOT A RACIST"? Please answer that without going apeshit on me. Thanks.

I am asian (half Japanese) and I participate in food porn so I can give you my perspective on quesiton #1.
I take photos of my food all the time. Why do I do it? Cause I LOVE food. Food is a factor in every decision I make in life, where I live, where I go on vacation, who I date, etc. And since it is such an important part of my life, I take photos of my meals and share it with my friends–specifically my Japanese friends. Yes, my non-asian friends enjoy the photos too. But my intended audience is my Japanese friends since a lot of my meals are Japanese.

Also, I am not offended by this question.

I think the third one can be explained by the general theory of stereotype formation:

In everyday life, we ignore about 75% of everything that is going on around us. We notice it, but we don't actually remember it. Can you recall all the people that you saw walking past you yesterday? No.

But we do notice and remember things that stand out to us for various reasons - say you walked past a fight, or someone said hello to you. Those things stick in our memory, where the other 75% of things don't.

So the theory of stereotype formation is that once we have a stereotype in mind (say bad Asian drivers) our memory plays tricks on us - we start remembering all the BAD Asian drivers that we come across, and all the white drivers that do similar stupid things tend to fall into the background and be forgotten.

So for your example, it is likely that you noticed or developed the idea that black people jaywalk a lot - and so as time goes on, you go about your normal day, but 75% of the jaywalkers you might see out of the corner of your eye, or in passing when not thinking about it get forgotten - and only those that stand out to you, that jog your memory enough to be remembered, are left.

That might account for #1 - but it could also be a cultural thing that relates to sharing food. I have noticed on my facebook page that only my Asian or middle-eastern friends post pictures. I could be doing the memory trick thing here too, like the jaywalkng, but I am generally very self-aware of that trait and I really don't recall ever seeing anyone from a different ethnic group than those two post pictures of food.

    1. My friends and I all post lots of pics of food on Facebook and most of us are white. So, I dunno.

    2. Lee covered this already. Also, "Mexican" is a nationality.

    3. I don't think it's so much that black people jaywalk as it is social groups who tend to have a robust street culture jaywalk. If I were to point to a group that I perceive as jaywalking a lot, I'd point to homeless folks. The street for them is home, office and social venue and I would expect that they have a sense of ownership of the street that folks who primarily use the street to get from point A to point B don't possess.
In short, I think it's a socioeconomic thing. If you and your friends can't afford to socialize in the bar or the coffee shop or whatever business establishment, you socialize outside and make that space your own.

Wow. You have had several startlingly intelligent responses here. I am incredibly impressed.

If you'd like to look into "common errors in the way people tend to think" a bit more deeply, I'd like to refer you to a fascinating page in wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases

If you work on minimizing these biases in your own thought, you will often be able to arrive more nearly at the actual truth of things.

Racism can exist without vitriol. In your case you have stereotypes that aren't NECESSARILY negative but it still makes you racist.

It pretty much bugs me when anyone says "I'm not racist..." because i don't know that there are many people who can say it truthfully.

Also: Mexicans aren't a race, bud.

No, that's okay. You're entitled to serious answers to your serious questions.

    1) All Asians ever do is eat food. Duh.
    2) All Mexicans can't decide what to name their kids so they decide to name them everything. Duh.
    3) Crosswalks are painted with white paint, which is clearly a product of white racism. Duh.

Because Asians have awesome food. If yours was that good you'd want a picture too.

Wow, I'm disappointed, seeing as most of your answers seem fairly insightful, and you go totally dumb in this thread.

Anyone who has to phrase anything with "NOT RACIST BUT" should read up more on logic and lurk more on various race-related forums.

Racialicious is good, Feministing is mostly woman-related, but also gets into race-related matters.
