Writings about Seattle

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm wondering if there are any good writings about the city and people of Seattle.

I may be romanticizing, but I'm looking for works that speak to our city like authors do to San Francisco. Any suggestions?

You might check out this Q&A from a while back that got into local history and non-fiction. For fiction, there is a list of about twenty various titles ranging from mystery to literary here. You might also check out Peter Donohue's anthology, Reading Seattle.

If you can track down "Anybody Can Do Anything" by Betty ("The Egg & I") MacDonald, it's a great autobiography about living in Seattle during the Great Depression. She lived just a block south of Roosevelt High School, on 15th NE and spent those years working odd jobs all over the city.

A friend just recommended "Poser" by Claire Dederer, emphasizing the Seattle/Bainbridge locales as being part of the fun of the book.

+1 on the Betty MacDonald recommendations! You can visit "Egg & I Road" in Chimacum, over on the peninsula.
