What are some good options for a one-year-old's birthday party?

We were going to do much outside of a cake, but some extended family members have decided they want to "be there" so we have to plan something. I'd like it to still be relatively low-key but fun for my 30-something friends and babies/kids of varying ages (>1 to 4). I'd also like to hold it outside of our home on account of the aforementioned kids.

We did a book club party for my 1 year old's 1st bday. She didn't need many toys and so I asked everyone to bring a favorite story. I had printed out bookplate stickers and had each guest write their name on them and put them on the inside cover of the book they brought. When we look back at her early books, we can remember who gave her which book for her 1st bday. As far as holding the event outside your home, try out some of the community center rooms. Many of the drop off kid care places also rent out on weekends.

If you have a range of kid ages, I'd suggest The Bubble Man. We had him at a two-year-old part with kids ranging from 1-6 and all seemed entertained. If your baby likes bubbles, The Bubble Man is fun and has a good environmental message. Entertaining for adults as well. Click here for his site: The Bubble Man

Try something like Chuck E Cheeze or Showtime Pizza with games and places to run around.
