Where can I recycle my old cell phone and iPod?

I have a Blackberry and iPod that are probably too old to be refurbed and I don't want to throw them away. Is there a local place that will take this kind of stuff to dispose of in an environmentally responsible way?

One other possible idea not mentioned here is to take the batteries out and add it to a toybox (your kids or someone else's).

If young children have their own electronics to play with, they're less likely to want to play with yours. It doesn't need to function...they just like having it as a prop.

(obviously not for age groups who drool and like to put things in their mouths)

iI don't know about the ipod but when I worked for a cell phone company we used to tell people to donate them to battered women's shelters. Even without a plan (and I think even without a SIM card) it can still dial 911.

Take it to any cell phone store...they usually accept them for recycling. I know Verizon and T-Mobile do.

Does it work? Is the iPod a touch screen? If so, then donate it to the blind. iPod touch or iPhones have built in text 2 speech options that allow blind people to navigate the menu screens. These accessibility options cost alot of money on non-apple devices. If it works and has a touch screen, find a local charity (lighthouse for the blind) that supports the blind and donate it. Its like giving a 6 year old cancer kid an xbox 360 & a dozen games.

Sure you can recycle them at any store, but if it works, they'll probably sell it. If they do recycle it, theres a chance the parts are shipped to some landfill in Africa where 8 year old kids burn all the plastic to get to the metal and make money off the salvage.

At this time, there is no such thing as "too old to refurb" with iPods. Check Powermax.com or go to the Mac Store (NOT the Apple store, it's different! www.macstore.com) in the U-district (on NE 45th street, about 20 yards from I-5) and you may even be able to get a few bucks in store credit.

    http://www.gazelle.com/

Gazelle is a good site for that. It looks kind of sketch, but I used it before and got $30 for my bricked 1st gen iPhone last summer. If they can't offer you money for the phone, they will recycle it free of charge -- win/win.

There are numerous charities that take cell phones for recycling or reuse for soldiers and battered womens shelters. But as it looks like you are just looking to get them to a drop off point for recycling, I found this search engine/database to locate those closest to you:

They will take your cell phone at InterConnection (http://computers.interconnection.org/)and I believe they will also take your old ipod. InterConnection is an awesome place not only for their recycling, but also their refurbishing program that helps local and global non profit organizations.

I don't know about the present, but when I worked there, Radioshack would take old electronics and give you store credit on a gift-card.

Here in "the other Washington," Target stores actually have recycling bins for cell phones and MP3 players. I can't help but wonder if employees rummage around for "treats," but whatever, right?

The iPod can be dropped off at any Apple Store location - Apple recycles old iPods, iPhones, and computers for free (after getting bad PR a couple years ago regarding their environmental practices).
