  1 0 I don't know the specifics of this, but this is almost always a result of failure to secure rights clearance. The original clearance was probably for broadcast rights only, as is typical, and when they went back to clear the rights for DVD release, which is a whole 'nuther thing, with new fees and royalties, the artist wanted too much money, or didn't want to do it at all for some reason. I found a review that postulated that the studio responsible may be attempting a double dip when (if) it is released in Blu-ray format as a "restored" version including original broadcast soundtracks. The theme song was Billy Joel's "My Life" (sung by a different singer), but the studio failed to secure the rights for syndication, so they use the end credit theme in syndication. Luckier commented about 1 year ago | Report 0 0 Likewise, almost all of the reruns, and DVD releases, of "The Larry Sanders Show" have the musical guest appearances stripped out. The original broadcast had a musical number in each episode; now only a very few do (though they sometimes keep the musician's speaking lines). I haven't seen the new DVD set to see if they've finally cleared all those songs. I think any artist would be crazy not to want to appear in that genius show in perpetuity, but it's not my call to make.
