What should I do with a new P-patch box in January?

I just came to the top of the wait list and got a P-patch box on my apartment building's roof deck. It's about 3 feet by 6 feet and has nothing in it put some old soil. Is there anything I should do to it now to get it ready for planting season?

Congrats on your patch! Mixing in some compost and then covering it with mulch will help mend and keep the soil you do have until you're ready to plant in the spring.

Seattle Tilth has a great book. "Maritime NW Garden guide" which gives a good breakdown of what you should do by season. They also have a new book coming out soon about urban gardening and I hear they discuss rooftop gardens and the like, which may be useful as you plan your spring planting.
