What's the best electric water kettle.

It doesn't have to have fancy temp control but should be fast, safe, reliable and not make the water taste weird.

I've been completely satisfied with this Cuisinart electric kettle. It boils the water real fast, has had no reliability problems except for when a friend tried to heat it on the stove, and doesn't contribute any off flavors. Pours well too.

Nothing compares with the Zojirushi water boilers from Japan. Most homes in Asia have one, and they know something about making tea. They are not cheap, but they have large volume, multiple temperature settings and an electric pump dispenser for unmatched ease of use.

I have this Hamilton Beach 8 cup kettle - I bought it because it was the only kettle I could find with a plastic-free stainless steel interior. I got one for my grandma too and she loved it.

This is all subjective. We also have a Cuisinart electric water kettle that gets the job done.

HOWEVER, the gold standard in hot water dispensers/heaters is arguably Zojirushi. They have a number of different models, with various capacities and features, but many of my tea-lovin' friends view these as the holy grail of water heaters.

    I have this one:
    http://www.amazon.com/Chefs-Choice-675-International-Cordless/dp/B0000667GU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1295032060&sr=8-1

I purchased it primarily because it's the one Alton Brown recommends.

    What I like about it:
-You don't have to orient the kettle on the base in a specific way; you just set it down and it works
-It's stainless steel, so I'm not worried about chemicals from plastic getting in the hot water and giving me cancer
-Most important: The lid opens up wide enough that it's easy to put things like eggs (for hard boiled eggs) and a sponge (when I wash it) in - a lot of kettles have a small opening, and it's really hard to clean them out.

I've had it for about 3 years and it works well and is still going strong.

I've had a bunch and none of them made the water taste weird. Usually weird water taste would be coming from the water itself or perhaps the first few times you use one with plastic parts because they might still be off-gassing.

Personally, I've had a few of these over the years and they have all been fast and good. I got my last one at target and they now sell Bodum ones which have a good reputation overall. Fun colors too!
