What goes with this gray skirt?!

I have a gray skirt which I love, but it doesn't seem to match ANYTHING I own. I'm kinda defeated because I can't seem to figure out what color actually goes with gray. Please don't laugh. It's a medium warm gray. No other colors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey It's kind of a long, Indian/Gypsy-looking skirt with lots of stitching detail, so I don't think the top should be too loud or elaborate. The thought of pairing this skirt with most colors, like purple or yellow or green, is hideous. It matches more GRAY, of course, but I don't want to be too matchy-matchy and wind up looking like Casper the Friendly Ghost. Black on top looks kinda strange (business up top, party down below?). Any thoughts on color? Style? Cut? Augh.

With anything this loose and flowing, I would wear something thin and fitted on top. Too much looseness and you'll end up looking sloppy. A tank top with nice wide straps or a thin-knit closely cut sweater with 3/4 sleeves would be great with this. As far as color, I think you can go crazy- it depends on how much color you usually wear. If you're rather reserved in dress, infernactual's suggestion of white is great. Otherwise, you could go with orange (orange and grey are surprisingly beautiful and sophisticated together), deep purple, emerald, or a really deep turquoise-blue. Plain seems like it would be better with this skirt- with details you risk either clashing with the style of the skirt or being too matchy-matchy and looking like you spend all day in a drum circle at the park. (No offense if you're into park drum circles. Me too. I just like my look to be versatile. :) )

I second Fnarf's suggestion of jewel tones, although due to my coloring, I would wear something more like burgundy/raspberry, blue green/emerald green/turquoise. I'd also try pairing the skirt with pale lemon yellow, blue gray, mauve, dusty rose, periwinkle, or hyacinth blue. Of course this all depends on the structure of the shirt. You could get away with any number of colors as long as the shirt is free flowing and relatively unstructured. Even a cami with the lacy stuff on top would be a decent pairing, I think.

I second seeing a picture of the skirt. What's it made out of? Does is have a lot of structure on its own, like a stiff wool or cotton, or does it have a lot of loose drape, like a light silk? The material and the level of detail in the skirt would change the answer to this question for me.

I like the idea of the colors you mentioned above. Not the primary/rainbow versions of purple, yellow and green, but the deeper jewel tones like Fnarf suggested. Mustard or yellow ocher looks lovely with gray, for instance. But it's the colors you like that will go with that skirt. Gray is difficult to match - treat it like a neutral.

Personally, I like gray to offset other contrasts, like black and white stripes. I'm big on uber-tailored menswear for ladies, though. And it sounds like your skirt doesn't fall into that camp. For a gypsy-style skirt, I'd go for a fitted top with some minor detailing, like an interesting neckline. Check out this Etsy seller: http://www.etsy.com/shop/Ureshii?ga_search_query=bamboo+shirt&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=2&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title&filter[0]=handmade. A lot of their shirts would look great with a long detailed skirt.

I'm assuming its the skirt in this picture - good suggestions here - black goes with practiculary anything- I know you said it looks strange but if it's a simple fitted black top it should be fine- a haltaneck possibly

Well, the seemingly obvious, would be a white top which could be long and match the style of the skirt.

There are a lot of whites and an infinite number of styles so there's a lot of room to get creative even though it's white.

We really need a pic of the skirt though!

Black and white tops look really good (not at all business on top, party down below) with this shade of grey, but any shade of blue would be the natural fit--particularly soft shades of grey blue. Jewel tones could work but I'm not as psyched about them with your coloring. I think washed out purple, and extremely pale pink, or a light sagey green could look nice.

As several people have mentioned, jewel tones always look great with gray. If you're looking for an edgier color combination, gray and yellow is really hot right now. I can't wear yellow, but if I could, I'd be all over mustard yellow with gray.

White? A plain crisp white blouse? Or a solid color that has a greyish tone to it, like a grey-yellow or grey-chartreuse, or even a greyish-brown if you can find the right one.

Jewel tones work with grey. Really rich, saturated color, even yellow topaz or orange.
