Where can I find dirt cheap yarn?

Acrylic is fine, color selection a must. I'm making a Dr Who scarf so it's muddy 70s colors that I'm looking for.

My friends who knit say that they sometimes pick up awesome scores at Goodwill/Value Village. Seems like every once and a while people who used to be crafty will drop off bags and bags of quality yarn. I imagine you might have even better luck if you're not too picky about the quality.

A friend of mine buys thrift store sweaters and unravels them. She avoids two things: Sweaters that are so old the armpits are felted; she'd have to cut the armpits out which would give her lots of short strands of yarn and not enough long pieces to realistically use for knitting. Sweaters that were serged rather than sewn together; these sweaters wouldn't yield any usable yarn.

I would imagine that you could buy sweaters at thrift stores for much less than what the yarn is worth.

I asked my friend who knits scarves all the time to give away and share with friends and work colleagues. She mentioned Big Lots is frequently a good spot and once made a big score at Grocery Outlet. Just a couple of places not mentioned by others here.

Yeah, I was going to suggest ebay also, but you need to specify what you want. I searched and got thousands of yarns.... in little 4 inch lengths pre-cut for hook latch rugs! LOL!

eBay might have what you're looking for, but Red Heart Super Saver is cheap and readily available in the colors you'll need without worrying about yarn from a smoker's house. Also, you could try seeing if anyone on Ravelry has what you need or is willing to trade.
