  0 0 When we had a bunch of really old furniture, we talked to charities and learned that they wouldn't take used mattresses, sofas with fold-out beds, or upholstery with those cushion button things sewn on--the latter two because of danger to kids. We ended up having St. Vincent de Paul pick up some of the non-upholstered furniture and got rid of the upholstered stuff in other ways. Also useful is the free section on Craigslist; we even found someone there who wanted our broken printer.
