Why is the Seattle QL so much better than the Portland one?

I am moving to Portland soon and have been asking some questions and scoping out their QL. I feel like not that many people use it compared to Seattle and they don't take it as seriously.

I think part of the reason Seattle's QL is so great is that it has a community that was already established on Slog and then migrated right on over to QL when it started up. Other than that, I really don't know, but I agree with you. Portland's QL seems much less interesting, vibrant, and relevant than ours. I suspect there may also be a factor of serendipity- people who happened to be literate, witty, and genuinely helpful just happened to be around when Seattle's QL got going and set the tone. The people here also do a good job of keeping each other in line (by not tolerating rudeness, stupidity, or general obnoxiousness). I know I was greatly impressed by the content when I first stumbled onto the site, and this feeling motivated me to return to contribute regularly. On the other hand, I've been to Portland's QL once or twice and have no interest in hitting it again, so it may be hard for them to change the overall tone if they're not attracting new contributors.

Well, I think it's incumbent upon you to take Portland's QL under your wing and make it great when you get there!

For better or worse, the Portland QL primarily has questions about Portland.

This QL though, for various reasons, gets a fair amount of non-Seattle specific questions. And so there are more people chiming in with answers and with more questions.

Some would claim the Portland QL is "better" because it's more focused. You don't see tons of general questions there that can easily be answered via Google.

I've poked around there at times when looking for Portland-specific information and I've found it useful.

Although the Portland site has been up for a while, we haven't really been promoting it much.

    Until now.

We're working on getting some experts up and running, and just generally getting the word out. It took a while for Seattle's Questionland to grow- we're thinking Portland will start budding soon enough.

I like Fnarf's answer. We're hoping folks like you will get in there and ask and answer a bunch of questions.
