I called Second Ascent last week to see what they had -- $22 to rent a pair of MSR snowshoes (with tails) for a weekend; an additional $8 for poles. I especially like that they have the MSRs, as these come with extra traction underneath for hiking up hill (which we have a lot of). My understanding is that most cheaper snowshoes are made for flat areas (like the midwest) and are useless if you're trying to gain any real elevation.   1 0 I rented some Tubbs 'shoes years ago at REI. I've since purchased a pair of MSR Evo Ascents and prefer them strongly to the big, clunky, relatively-traction-free relics that I used from REI. I don't know what REI nor 2nd Ascent have on offer now but Just a suggestion. Both Second Ascent and REI have the Evo Ascents. I like SA better, because you're supporting a small local biz.
