What are some essential funk artists?

I'm interested in listening to/learning to play funk but I honestly have no idea where to start. I'm looking for some quintessential/classic artists to listen to, and maybe some more modern incarnations as well. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Parliament Funkadelic. You ever wonder where those funky west coast hip hop beats from the 90's were sampled from?

New Orleans own - The Meters!

    The Ohio Players

    Sly and The Family Stone

Can I even say Rick James with out Dave Chapell's permission?

James Brown. His style of soul and R&B paved the way for what would later be called Funk.
