QFC vs Safeway

The general consensus seems to be that QFC is more expensive than Safeway. Is this actually true? I live eqidistant from both, so I am curious about this, but don't care enough to actually visit both to compare prices.

QFC is definitely more expensive. I've even noticed that QFC has higher prices than Madison Market, Whole Foods, and Met Market for some items. I especially noticed it for one of my favorite candies, Fran's Gold Bars. QFC's price was 20 percent higher than those three stores.

Safeway is less likely to carry certain specialty items, such as anything gourmet (they don't even sell Fran's chocolates) or many types of ethnic foods. For example, you can get tofu at Safeway, but not tempeh or miso.

If convenience is as or more important to you than saving money, I suggest doing all your shopping at QFC. If savings is more important, you'd be better off buying as much as you can (but never meat or fish products) at Safeway and getting the rest at QFC.

There have been several informal studies where someone has comparison shopped at local groceries, and QFC always comes out as significantly more expensive than other grocery stores....even places like Metropolitan Market.

Here is an example of one, from 2009: http://blog.seattlepi.com/mikedavidson/archives/172210.asp There is even an accompanying spreadsheet with items and prices.

Whenever possible, I'd bypass both and go to Trader Joe's. If you can get gourmet food at budget prices cheaper than both QFC & Safeway, why not do it? Of course, they don't stock nearly as much selection, aren't as good for some fresh veggies (not all) and are not an option for household items like cleaning materials, shaving cream, TP, ect. For most of the basic inedible household items, QFC and Safeway are usually about even, surprisingly. For the basic food items though, I'd do Safeway. For the more exotic fruits, veggies and other imports, I'd go to QFC, or an ID store like Uwajimaya if you don't mind the drive.

One area where QFC definitely wins over Safeway price-wise: Bulk vs Singular. If you're looking for smaller servings of meat and fish, QFC wins over Safeway every time. Safeway will only save you money if buying in bulk for such items, which is useless unless you have a large family or room-mates with the same taste in food.

SNOB Alert: I find the general atmosphere of (nearly) any Safeway to be enough of a deterrent that drives me to QFC every time.
Besides that, though, this adage still holds: Ya get what ya pay for.

Do not purchase or consume anything from Safeway that they handle. Canned, frozen. packaged goods, shampoo, etc.? Fine- but no bakery, meat, produce or fish under any circumstances.

The only thing I like about QFC is the wine selection (relatively good for a supermarket) and the fish deals are often very good.

I tend to do most of my shopping at QFC for the simple reason that they are the closest major supermarket near me (also, they are open 24 hours). But, I also regularly shop at Trader Joe's in the U District for tortillas and basil. When I'm near a Safeway, I'll go there. They often have good prices on beer. I go to PCC to buy steak, and to Whole Foods to buy salami.

The bottom line is, different places sell different products, and some things are cheaper in certain places rather than in others.

So, I had a bit of extra time on my hands (currently funemployed) and took a day to price shop for my favorite foods at my n'hood stores which include Madison Market, Trader Joes, Safeway and QFC. And here's what I found...

    1. If Mad Market is close it beats the price on most items including: Nancy's yogurt, Milk (I went local over Organic), Coffee, Dave's bread, and any bulk.

    2. I hate TJs. It's over packaged, bougie, crap food that tries to market the organic, natural food craze while much less of their food is such and exported from around the world. AND it's over-priced. All of the items above are more expensive here. Except for cheese--they do have a decent selection.

    3. QFC is good for canned tomatoes and sauces and Annie's Mac n Cheese and has a much better organic selection than Safeway. Leads me to believe over Safeway, they may win out, except for

    4. Safeway for best price on Tillmook cheeses.

Truth? Organic, local, bulk kind of eating is who I am. You know the type and I can be a bit of a snob about it. However, get a co-op membership at Mad Market and shop the sales, buy unprocessed, and it honestly is the cheapest way to go. You won't go hungry or broke and you're doing more for community and environment than anywhere else.
