What is the best brand of boxed pasta?

I am sure making or using fresh pasta would be great step above boxed dried pasta, but it is a staple available in my own kitchen and finds its way into many things we eat at home. On some occasions I cook up just a small handful of rigatoni noodles as a treat for my parrots. They prefer it with a little basil tomato sauce and you can see how each has a preferred foot for holding their food, on the next day one foot will be stained a little brown from the sauce.

I asked an Italian friend and he said he preferred Barilla to all others and so I have been using that. Often Fred Meyer has the various types in one pound boxes on sale for a dollar each. Do you have another preferred brand to recommend?

    The Sicilian I worked for always used De Cecco when it wasn't his own homemade pasta.

    There's a relatively new brand that they're carrying at my local QFC. I can't remember what the brand is called, but they come in dark blue plastic (look a bit like a pound of coffee), and the labels are in Italian. It's a little cheaper than the other high-end pastas, and cooks to a perfect, toothsome al dente. I like the corkscrews (tubular noodles shaped into corkscrews) and the shells. It's my current favorite.

    If I remember, I'll check the brand tonight when I get home.

    That is absolutely adorable.

    I've tried lots of brands...Barilla, American Beauty, Golden Grain, a slew of cheap generics...and I really can't tell the difference.

    Since it's for your birdies, the only thing I might suggest is something organic.

    Rasti Pasta made and shipped from Marietta, Ohio.
    Check them out on-line... family owned and attention to detail. They are concidered to be quite a valued gift around these parts... even have "cute" pasta for valentine's day themes, etc.

    I always go with Barilla too, but I don't know that it really makes that much of a difference. That's adorable about your birds. Do they have consistent preferred claw/foot for other activities as well?

    I'm Italian, and I can tell you that the preferred brand of pasta in Italy is De Cecco, followed by Barilla. I buy both at QFC!

    Puglisi is good but unobtainable here. AFAIK.
    DeCecco is the best of the commonly available and I think it's at QFC or even subway... Ronzoni will do in pinch.

    Trader Joe's brand is my favorite.

    It's also won at least one blind taste test and happens to be amazingly cheap.

    Well my absolute favorite dried pasta is the stuff Ethan Stowell makes through Lagana Foods. It's not completely dried though. It must be refrigerated and is quite expensive. My next favorite is Rustichella d'Abruzzo. Hands down my favorite dried pasta, it's got a rough texture which really clings to sauce. If I'm not using those, it's either trader joes or Barilla.
