Are racist jokes ever funny?

I like to think they're only funny when they're blatantly archaic or have horrifically unrealistic/ red state worded anecdotes.

Racist jokes can be funny, sexist jokes can be funny, classist jokes can be funny. It's not the subject matter as much as the delivery. The only time an otherwise-funny racist/sexist/classist joke isn't funny is if the intent behind it is actually hateful.

While we're on the subject, from my friend's Facebook, minutes ago:

Friend One: I am really glad to be moving out of this neighborhood. I'm sorry. I'm just going to come out and say it: I fucking hate Latin music.

Friend Two: Don't be shy saying you hate Latin music because it does suck. They would say the same if you had a shitty old hatchback valued at 4 tacos and a soundsystem valued at 4 grand and you blasted your music.

Four tacos. Still cracking me up.

RACIST JOKES: Not funny. Generally degrading or based on negative stereotypes historically tied to true racist movements. Jokes based on X race's work ethics, X race's propensity to theft/drugs, X race's greed and stinginess with money, and X' race's xenophobia and superiority complex are all examples. Most of the time, I have a hard time detaching any inherent humor from a clearly damaging stereotype, and I can't help but feel like the person telling the joke actually buys in to what they're saying.

RACIAL JOKES: Quite different. I think of these more as jokes based on neutral or otherwise harmless stereotypes (is there such a thing? I kind of think so). Examples would be the "stuff white people like" website or X race's love for the *ahem* large white ladies. Said race's propensity to RAPING white women gets file under RACIST.

Am I splitting hairs? Maybe. But I don't mind a bit of RACIAL humor. Tell me this isn't funny: http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e114/nosilla1/owned-baby-papa.jpg

Everyone's definition of humor is different. Some people find videos of babies blowing spit bubbles the height of hilarity, or people getting socked in the crotch with softballs. In my opinion, most humor, like satire, works best when it's used by the powerless to jab at the powerful. When it's reversed, it is not only not funny, it is profoundly vulgar.

So long as the intent is humor then yes, they're funny.

Totally depends on the intent and the company.

I took a comedy class from a pro many years ago. He strongly objected to racist jokes, but when he played samples of them in class, nobody laughed by me. I was so tired from being up 18 hours that they tickled me.
Plus, as Kimberly pointed out, if they were horrifically unrealistic or blatently offensive, they become ludicrous, which was the case... they were SO bad, they were good.

He never called on me to explain why I was laughing so much, but I was embarassed that i couldn't stop myself...I was slap-happy tired.

Honestly, I think it's about whether harm is meant by them.

Almost all jokes poke fun at something, and in many cases it's good that they do -- they're a way to lighten otherwise ugly subjects. When one of my family members almost died in a stabbing, we couldn't stop telling jokes about it, but we're sick that way. It's good for us.

I think people need to lighten up and there's nothing wrong with very very sick humor. When my ethnicity is made fun of I am never offended. Taking offense, to me, seems like a sign of insecurity.

Stereotypes are INHERENTLY funny!!! Go with it... :)

I won't be telling racist jokes anymore since I found out that it could be considered a "hate crime" and since most black people commit crimes, I wouldn't want to be in jail w/ them :D

when they are evidently flawed or outdated and use stereotypes or (carefully) historical references then it is amusing yes, racist jokes that make a genuine stab at racial assumptions are not funny, racist jokes should be carefully developed and tested on small audiences as they can lead to nasty incidents if misinterpreted

I think it totally depends on who's telling them, & also the audience they are being told to.
A bunch of white frat boys- never funny. Dave Chappelle? Funny.
