Arrggh! I left a carton of eggs out on the counter last night. Are they salvageable?

I made corn meal pancakes and scrambled eggs last night for the evening meal.
We needed comfort food so it was breakfast for dinner!

This morning I find the carton of eggs still sitting on the counter. They had been out of the refrigerator for about 12 hours. They're back in now.

Should I toss them?
Should I hardboil them?
Can I still use them?

My policy is usually it isn't worth getting sick over possibly spoiled food, but this would represent not only the cost of the eggs but a completely new trip to the store, etc.

What do you think?

Americans are the only people I've known to put eggs in the refrigerator. They're fine.

To add the the "they're fine" chorus, I will offer this reassurance.

When I'm making French omelets in the morning, I take the number of eggs I'm planning on using out the night before so in the morning they're at room temperature. And a French omelet is runny in the middle.

Eggs last for weeks outside the fridge.

JUSt to be clear about all the answers below, eggs in the shell are fine, eggs out of the shell are not.

Eat em. Cook em hard if you're worried. Or better yet, just bake with them.

It's been my experience that when eggs go bad, they go BAD. That is, they smell so strongly of sulfur, there's no way you're going to do anything with them other than pour them down the sink.

You should be fine. Eggs can last a while on the counter. If you want to be extra safe then use them for something where they are cooked thoroughly (hard boiled egg for example) that will make sure that the minute chance of any salmonella-type nasty is killed in the cooking process.

I'll jump on the "they're fine" boat. True, other countries don't treat their eggs post-production the way we do, so they last longer outside the fridge, however, one night at room temp, even in the US, isn't going to do anything.
    Also, cornmeal pancakes? Yum!

Eggs setting out in their shells at room temperature will not spoil overnight. However, if you want to make hardboiled eggs out of them, go right ahead.

The longer eggs stand out, the more likely it is that they MIGHT and eventually WILL spoil, but as long as they are not cracked, you're ok.

At least, this is what my wife and I discussed when I read your question aloud.

Remember, chickens sit on those eggs for hours, and they don't go bad... a few hours at room temp, after having been refrigerated won't really put them or you at risk.

But do use them up first/promptly in any case.
