Is meditation good for a child? Is so when should you start?

Both my kids are a bit high strung and I am wondering if meditation would help them. It works well for me, when I feel anxious I meditate for 20 minutes or so and I feel both equalized and energized. But I am wondering if the attention span of a 10 and 15 year old is too short to make meditation a useful tool. Any experienced parents out there?

I am not a parent, but I know kids who do meditate, from about age 10. They were started off by just pausing at regular times. For example, before eating, everyone stops and sits and feels their weight on the chair, breath in and out, then we start to eat. The notion is to come to rest in the present, even if just for a moment. Then from there the practice grows, and you can factor it in as a tool to help with stress or over excitement.

As for regular meditation, you will know that you can lead a horse to water, but ...

If they do show an interest, then that is great. But start with small amounts of time. Five minutes is a long time when just starting out.

I would also suggest either a breath based practice or a mantra. As you will know from your own practice it is not just the coming to a halt physically that is important, but also the practice of maintaining single pointed attention.

In short, yes, meditation can be good for children, but the teacher needs to know how to make it age appropriate. I'll ask my friend, the mother of two meditating kids, if she has any tips for you.

My kids are 7 and 9 and started meditating years ago. I think that once they can understand the concept of the body and mind, they are ready! I have met many children who have benefited by learning these internal techniques, whether simple mindfulness of the breath, walking meditation, or some other technique.
My kids have attended class at the Kadampa meditation center inBallard, and kids the ages of yours might enjoy the Sunday morning general class or a smaller branch class which you can find at meditateinseattle.org
    I hope this helps!

No parent here, but... meditation is good for a child in the same way rice pilaf and a healthy stock portfolio are. It couldn't hurt them, but I highly doubt they would have much of any interest in it. You might as well get them a subscription to Good Housekeeping or Tivo Oprah for them.
