Is it absurd to spend $550/month on groceries for two people?

We are buying all organic fruits and veggies and many other organic foods. No meat or alcohol. I still feel like it's a lot to spend every month, but maybe not???

I spend about $250/week for a family of four. All organic vegetables and milk, one meat meal a week. That's just food, not shampoo, beer, etc.

I consider good quality food to be the best investment/indulgence possible, and focus my resources on the meals I put on the table rather than a nicer car, paying off my debts or even saving for my kids' college education.

$550 for two people sounds reasonable to me.

I spend about $50 to $100 a week on food, being organic fruit and veg, and nice cheeses, for myself only. So, for two people, it does not seem to me to be wildly out of range.

That doesn't seem high to me. I spend around $300 on groceries for one person and have similar buying patterns to you, although I do buy meat.

You could likely cut that down by dome some competitive shopping. I tend to go to certain stores for specific items and try to buy most of my produce at the farmer's market.

I don't think it's that high, but I'm in the camp of buying all sorts of things and trying them, whether they're condiments or main course-type things, or just random stuff I find on the shelves. I guess the question is, how many meals is that $550 covering? Is it just breakfast and dinner or is it all three? Less? More? If it's all the meals all the days, that works out to be about $9 a day for everything, making it $3 a meal, which is super cheap in my opinion. So, no, that's not a lot. But then again, I can justify any purchase. Try me.

Yes, that's high. Higher than I would pay, unless I was supporting a family. But I suppose if you can afford it, what's the difference? It's your money; spend it as you wish!

Of course, I'm so broke I can't even purchase food until payday on the 15th. This maybe my hungriest stretch so far. At least hunger is good for existential contemplation, right?

Do you spend much more on restaurants on top of this?

If you're getting majority of your meals from your grocery list then like everyone else said, it's not too bad.

If you'd like to make sure you're not unintentionally spending money, try to always use a shopping list when going to the store.

Are you shopping around for the best deal on organics? Are you going for more exotic / higher priced items? Are you big eaters? Many factors play into your gocery bill so without more information I am not sure anyone can provide a good answer. It does seem a bit high but without more information it's hard to say.
