What are the best options for kid-friendly Black History Month events?

I want my kids to learn about African American history in the Northwest but I don't see many events that would be good for my kids, ages 7, 9 and 12. Are there any interactive exhibits, plays, anything that would hold their interest and spark discussion?

The new African-American Museum on MLK. Contact Brian and get his advice as to whether there are exihibits and events in town ideal for these ages, and what he knows about the offerings of other orgs.

Child department Librarians downtown are a treasure trove of information. Check out website and/or call and ask to speak to a children's literature librarian.

The very BEST thing you can gift your children with is to not limit experiences with the rich Black culture (African Am and African both) to a specific month and by doing so encourage "exceptionalism", which is the surest path to experience groups as the Other - modified Americans, rather than Americans who are Black/Af-Am/African. The emphasis resting most on your common experience of being of a fellow member of the the Human Race and then second as among the first Americans; persons with unique contributions, an amazing, rich heritage and also very difficult stories tied with those of European Americans and the continuing efforts by good people to never forget and heal.

There is a film adaptation of the book "Lincoln and Douglas: An American Friendship" happening tomorrow at Meadowbrook Community Center. http://www.seattleschild.com/calendars/family-fun?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D92986756

On Feb. 24, Eva Abram portrays an African American woman from Tacoma who was instrumental in fighting racism. This is recommended for ages 11 and older. http://www.seattleschild.com/calendars/family-fun?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D93095500
