    Just to help clarify:

Are there any colors you have in mind? or any that you would or would NOT like to wear (besides white)?

Do you have a length in mind? or will any do?

Casual or formal? Funky or conservative?

Is this a wedding dress that you are wearing to your own wedding or someone else's?

What season is this dress for? or does it matter to you?

What is the venue for the wedding?

What is your max. price that you want to spend?

    What is your dress size?

And what are your best body features? legs? boobs? arms? butt? etc...

One of my besties just got heterosexually committed to her long time partner at The Space Needle. This love celebration was not sanctioned by any government or religion but was witnessed by the community and she looked totally banging in a very graphic black and white patterned jersey dress by BEBE of all places, floor length and high-necked, it was a dress another woman may have worn to dress up for a nice dinner at midnight in Cannes. She looked absolutely stunning celebrating her love her way. So, my advice is wear any dress that you look and feel great in. No rules! Long, short, gold, brocade. I only ask of you . . . celebrate yourself, go big. Just because you aren't all tiara-ed up in a pretty princess big old cupcake dress doesn't mean all eyes shouldn't be on you and your fabulousness. You better werk. SO Nordstrom Rack, Ebay, thrift, Barneys! Wear Margiela. Get it at Totakaelo.

Not wearing a wedding dress opens you up to a world of possibility. Look for hot deals on Gilt Group or Shop it to Me.

Don't be afraid of black or patterns! DO YOU!

Even if you are not wearing a white dress, you (and the groom) are still the focal point of your wedding. Consider the feature of your outfit that you want to convey this message. There should be something that sets it apart from the norm- like a full skirt, a train, or amazing fabric.
Every year brides come in to my shop who have purchased a fun party dress to wear for their wedding- and at the last minute decided it wasn't special enough. They purchase a white or ivory dress last minute, and under a lot of time pressure, because they are concerned about looking like a guest at their own wedding.
At my shop (and I'm sure many others) we offer bridal styles in color, so you can wear them again, but still feel like the bride. If you want to avoid bridal shops in general, I'd suggest looking through Polyvore.com for ideas. It's a nice way to get an overview of what's out there. Good luck!

The non wedding dress can be a beautiful thing. I would suggest that you keep the color somewhat soft and consider the lighting of your ceremony and reception area. Consider something with a little shine and don't forget to try sitting down in a chair or attempting a few dance moves.

I just changed my profile picture to me in my wedding dress. I got it online from a bridesmaid dress website and then had it hemmed and taken in a smidge in the bust (I ordered it slightly big in fear of getting it too small. I didnt need to worry)

I had my wedding dress made:

    http://itsmarkmitchell.com/

He did a great job for me, and I would recommend him to anyone. Every person asked where I got my dress (1920s inspired, black and champagne colored) and I got to tell them I had it made and designed for me! I would totally wear it again, and it was stunning.

He may not be in your style (best to talk with him) or he may be busy, but figured I'd link him cause he is amazing.

Try BCBG! Their clothing is sophisticated and very well made. You can usually dress any of their pieces up or down, too.

A dress that I consider universally flattering, wearable, and overall badass is Vivien of Holloway's retro circle dresses: http://www.vivienofholloway.com/en/category/50s-halterneck-circle-dress/. Relatively inexpensive, lots of fabrics and colors, and easy to dress up/down.

    I love:
    Whirling Turban (http://whirlingturban.com/)
    and
    Stop Staring (http://www.stopstaringclothing.com/),

and they're definitely reasonably priced for a dress you will definitely be able to wear again!
