What hot dishes are good to take to a pot luck?

I'm going to a potluck where there will not be any way to heat (or maintain heat in) my dish. I know that most people will respond to this challenge by making salads, but you can only eat so much salad. Last time, I brought macaroni and cheese (casserole-style) and it worked pretty well, but I need more options.

You could do an Asian noodle dish. Get soba noodles, cook them up, add cooked veggies, and toss with either a peanut sauce or a soy ginger vinaigrette. Add sesame seeds and voila! Good hot, room temp, or cold.

My favorite is a savory bread pudding, or strata. I've done them with rosemary bread, goat cheese, kale, prosciutto, and whatever else sounded good. Huge, huge hit and still delicious when it starts to cool down. By the way lovely lady- were you at Senor Moose last night?

I love the idea of slow braised meats at this time of year. I also love the idea of taking a crock pot to a pot luck. It's a really simple solution to adding a hot item to the pot luck as it would only require a plug.

One dish that would be fun and economical is Pipian Verde tacos. It utilizes Pork Butt (really the shoulder) that you cut into bit size pieces toss with a light flour, kosher or sea salt, ground cumin, coriander, allspice & chili powder dredge, then sear it off until golden brown on all sides. Then add minced garlic, diced Jalapenos and chopped onions and sautee. Then add orange zest and it's juice, pureed tomatillos and simmer until the pork is tender. Pumpkin seeds are a common ingredient as well, but optional. It is really about the cilantro and tomatillos, and don't forget to use salt, season as you go, taste it along the way and adjust as you like!

I also like to add hominy to the pork once it's tender as it gives this some added body. To serve this dish make a build your own taco platter of fresh corn tortillas, cilantro sprigs, slivered red onion (drizzled with Red wine vinegar), Sour Cream and lime wedges.

New potatoes with radish pesto! Making pesto is one of my favorite pastimes, and it is SOOOO yummy with radish greens instead of basil. Just mush them up with pine nuts (or whatever nuts you have) and lots of garlic and olive oil and toss it with boiled cubed new potatoes. VOILA! So simple, and so delicious.

This roasted purple cauliflower will eat well at room temp. It has a sherry vinaigrette and crunchy homemade breadcrumbs.

Au Gratin potatoes the way mom used to make are always a hit and keep their heat fairly well. (Done in a glass pan, they can be zapped to get the heat back up if you want, or stuck in the oven to keep hot until eating time.) Things with tomato sauce stay hot pretty well... and things that start hot, like dal with naan, that are also very good at room temp are always welcome.

If you want to go less main-dish, I'd suggest desserts and antipasto plates. Cakes, cookies, etc can be prepared ahead, don't need to be heated, and are always welcome. Antipasto plates let you throw together cheese, bread, meat, etc. with a minimum of effort, and can also be done heat-free.

I'm with Robin on the crock pot idea- you can make something hot and it will stay that way for quite a while. I personally recommend this:http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Slow-Cooker-Chicken-Taco-Soup/Detail.aspx

It's an incredibly delicious chili/soup that is super easy to make. I substitute chicken broth for the beer and don't always use an onion. I know it's not particularly gourmet and the canned ingredients make it sound as though it will taste like canned soup, but it doesn't. Bring chips, homemade guacamole, and possibly cheese.

Ahhh I was going to say baked macaroni and cheese, then I read the rest of your question. I think casseroles are pretty great for potluck type dinners. I especially like this one

    http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/cheesy-squash-casserole-recipe/index.html

Also, Martha Stewarts cookbook has a great butternut squash risotto recipe that I've brought to potlucks before and has been a huge hit.

Or, what about homemade guacamole or some other sort of awesome spread?

    Now I'm hungry.
