Was Tasha Yar planned to die, right from the start of Star Trek: The Next Generation?

Someplace in the first season of ST:TNG, the character of Tasha Yar is unexpectedly killed in action, removing the actress Denise Crosby from the cast.

I'd heard that she wasn't happy, the modern equivalent of just saying "Hailing Frequencies Open"... but I'm wondering if there was always a death planned in the series.

Does anyone know?

Everything I have read indicates that she was somewhat unhappy being in one of those recurring roles of a bridge officer that was there but whose story was never really explored or developed individually. The death of the character was subsequently written in to release her from the show. Later she was instrumental in approaching them to reprise her participation in the series with an alternate timeline so her character reappeared and other permutations.

This is also as explained in a Wikipedia entry on her:

She also has an attractive and informative website:

Russ Campbell's right, she was unhappy with the series and wanted out. I don't really blame her, the first season of ST:TNG was terrible. On the other hand, even when she did have more central parts, her acting left a lot to be desired. It really showed up in the later seasons when she comes back for a few guest appearances, everyone else had improved (except maybe Marina Sirtis... ST:TNG seemed to have an problem with getting good, strong female characters) and she was still pretty bad.

But yeah, leaving the show was her own choice, not something that was planned.
