Why can't parents provide Driver's Ed to their kids?

A bill is being discussed in the Washington State Legislature that would allow parents to be the official providers of Driver's Education to their own kids -- training that is required in order for a teen to get a license. What are the reasons for an against this idea? My mom taught me to drive!

Because not everybody's parents are great drivers themselves, let alone able to teach driving to their kids.

For example, in the last seventeen years, I've seen my mother use a turn exactly signal four times.

Wouldn't that completely defeat the purpose of requiring Driver's Ed? If the rule didn't exist, presumably SOMEONE would teach a kid to drive before they took the test, so the requirement is just there to make sure the kid is getting instruction that meets certain standards. If we just let any old schmoe be a Driver's Ed instructor to their kids, why not just do away with the whole rule?

Maybe if there were some sort of certification process parents could go through (Driver's Ed Ed, if you will), it might make sense.

Special equipment. You really need the car with two sets of brakes and a roof sigh to do this safely.

My father was a drivers ed instructor for many, many years. As the youngest, I was the only one not instructed by him after he moved to adult defensive driving instruction. My siblings are terrible drivers and got a lousy education. I am a great driver. We all agree that it is due to the improved teaching environment. There is some value to learning to drive from someone you are not related to. Less stress, less personal involvement and just better.
