Can one grow peanuts in Seattle?

I've seen them at the farmer's markets. Is it easy to grow peanuts here, and how should I go about it?

DO IT. they are the coolest things to watch grow - especially once they start developing the peg and burrowing the flower. the foliage is lovely and they'll be good neighbors to the other plants in your garden with all the nitrogen they'll provide.

Make sure you look for short season varieties, like early spanish or pronto. i wouldn't gamble with anything with a longer growing season than 120 (even that's pushing it).

you'll need to sprout them indoors for about a month ahead of planting. make sure your sprouts are sitting in highly aerated soil, and make sure your soil outdoors is exceptionally well-draining. don't be stingy with the sand! i've had luck planting outdoors in early may, both in pots and raised beds. if we have a cool rainy summer, the plants will turn pale and hate you. but if it's a warm bright summer, you'll have lots of gorgeous lushness with bushels of nuts!

your biggest problem will be keeping the squirrels out of them. i made cages of mesh and buried the edges into the ground and those critters still ate way more of my peanuts than i did. this year i'm going to try placing wire mesh just under the soil surface before planting the sprouts.

Not without a greenhouse and a heat source. They need soil temps to stay above 65 degrees for several months.

but wht the heck? Give it a try. We may not have a cabbage summer this year.
