Great History Reads? for Questionland Seattle

Great History Reads?

I've lately been reading lots of popular (and not so popular) history books, most recently The Lost City of Z, Into Africa and The Ghost Map, and I have Salt: A world history, and Hitler's willing executioners waiting for me at the library.

Any suggestions for things I should add to my pile? I really liked the Lost City of Z.

A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman is a fascinating, lively and eminently readable history of 14th century Europe, if you want to delve into Medieval history.

Pretty much anything by Barbara Tuchman rocks. But A Distant Mirror is particularly fascinating.

Cool! I should have given you more info, but I was too lazy to get up. It's "Krakatoa: the Day the World Exploded, August 27, 1883," by Simon Winchester.

I'm also REALLY enjoying "The History of the Atomic Bomb," by Richard Rhodes, and it won a Pulitzer. However, it is NOT light reading. It's a brick.

Also also, check out "The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher," by Kate Summerscale, about a Victorian-era murder at a time when detectives really weren't supposed to ask delicate questions.
