Are Seattle apartment rental rates going up, staying the same, or going down lately...like in the last year or so?

I was just wondering if the economy has changed the apt. rental rates any? Is there any relief to the skyrocketing prices? Do you think they will ever get lower? Or do you think Seattle is doomed to be a new California/SF/LA?

Anecdotally, I think prices are going down. When we were looking at apartments a couple months ago, I was amazed at how many really nice places were totally within our price range. Apartment-owners know that collecting a lower rent beats an empty unit, and the recession has helped check some of the ridiculousness.

Generally going down, but it depends what part of the rental market you're interested in...

I just signed papers on a luxury studio that ended up being 12.5% more expensive than the bare bones studio I've been living in for the last year. It's a larger space, better location, tons of amenities... And if I'd tried to find something cheaper than what I had been living in I probably wouldn't have... As far as I can tell, the high end of the market is dropping hugely, but low end and is holding steady. Of course, the type of apartment you're looking for is a factor as well, It seems that two beds have dropped more significantly than studios and one-beds.

My stupid apartment that I pay $1375 per month for is now on craigslist for $920. Same complex, same layout, same floor level & view, INFURIATING!
