I went to Washington from 98-01 and was in the APP program. The school felt extremely segregated to me. There were about 3 black kids in the APP program, a couple more in the spectrum program and many more in the "regular" program (as it was the neighborhood school for regular enrollment and the central district has more people of color than, say, North Seattle). You can guess which group the award winning music program and math team (and whatever other brag-worthy stuff) drew from.
This division was uncomfortable for me, especially because nobody really talked about it (but everyone knew it and it was so obvious).

Both of my kids went through APP at Washington.

I would say that they got an appropriate academic opportunity. I'm not sure they could have gotten that at another school.

They both complained about the size and factory feel of the school but they each did form relationships with teachers.

The math, of course, was a disaster. But that would be true at any middle school in Seattle.

On the whole, it was the best choice available.

Washington is a school that strives to meet the needs of all the students and does a great job at it!
