What's a good present for an 11 year old boy?

Not too big because it has to go in a suitcase!
Thanks for the help.

Does he like to read? In that case I'd suggest books (because that was my favorite present as a kid). Susan's Cooper's the Dark is Rising series can often be bought in a single volume or as a boxed set and the main characters are all round his age. Philip Pullman's Dark Materials series, The Hobbit, and U.K. Leguin's Wizard of Earthsea cycle are all great books and would probably appeal to him. If he's more of a creative type I'm a big proponent of toys that'll nourish that creativity- a really neat set of markers (grown-up looking ones, like the awesome box set of pen-size markers Pentel makes), a lego set he can use to build whatever he pleases, or a different building set like K'nex (sp?) might be fun for him. When buying gifts, though, you've got to know your target audience- some kids his age would be delighted with a new book while others would think "Oh, a book...great?", some are still super-interested in "toys" while others think they're too old for toys and would rather have sports equipment or a video game for their new system. I was still really into imaginative play as a "tween", but many kids the same age today feel like they're past that. If he's more interested in looking and feeling adult he might think music (a cd or maybe a gift card for itunes) is cool.

I got my little brother a Venus Fly Trap once and he LOVED it. Sometimes you can find them in containers, so you might be able to travel with it.

Try the card game "Uno" by Parkers Bros.
Or, do you recall the "How and Why" series of science books? (They might have been a subset of the "Time/Life" books.) If you can find one on a subject that the kid enjoys, you could hit a home run and advance his studies as well...

You might also consider a comic book "graphic novel"... there are plenty to choose from... ask for help at your local comic book shop or Walden Books, or Borders, if you can find them. Just make sure the content is age-appropriate...there are a lot of mature themed books out there... worse than just Wolverine popping his claws!

A gift card to Gamestop. They are everywhere & there is no doubt in my mind that the 11 year old boy in question has some type of gaming station. He can buy new or used games and accessories.

There are some great graphic novels out that boys love love love. You can go to your local bookstore, or take him to HIS local bookstore and let him choose.

Kind of along the same lines that sphinx said, I would find out if he has general interests in certain areas. However, instead of a book or thing, take him to a cool place! Does he like sciency things? Take him (and maybe a friend) to a science museum. Animals? Hit up the zoo! You get the idea. Make sure he has a camera and can take photos/record the day somehow, because I know when I get into things and had a really good time, I like to spend the next several days/weeks sharing the cool stuff I learned/experienced. Sharing is caring in the internet world, or so I've heard.

And plus, if his parents are comfortable with the idea, he might just enjoy spending a day with someone who isn't his parents that treats him with respect (like an adult!)
