Where can I donate used art supplies?

If I'm gonna clear the clutter, I need to get rid of a heap of stuff. I have lots of art supplies that my kids have grown tired of, but I'm loathe to throw them away. Are there places that accept things like used crayons, construction paper, tissue paper etc?

I'm sure your local school would be glad to have them, but the easy way is to list them on freecycle.org and someone will happily come and get them from you. (note: looks like the site is temporarily down).

There also is a facebook page called Seattle bARTer.

List your items there and I'm sure someone will contact you to take them off your hands.

You could also list them on freecycle.

The answers you've gotten already are great. Here's another: if you've got a bundle of items to "find homes" for, organize a kid-stuff swap with friends who also have children. Bring gently used toys, art supplies, and clothing--things that your kids are ready to offer up--and you cultivate the idea, while your kids are young, that these items have value and are reusable. Whatever is left over can be donated to schools, Goodwill, etc.

Like my fellow organizers have already suggested, your local elementary would be a good first option. Beyond that though, the main thing is to donate them SOMEWHERE rather than tucking them back into a drawer just in case you think of a better option.

I donate most art supplies to the local elementary school in my area; they really welcome my donations even though my kids are now in high school. I do only donate the crayons that are at least 2/3 long and do toss those that are smaller. There is a crayon recycle option on the East coast but the shipping charges make it a bit cost prohibitive. Another option is to check out http://www.donateseattle.org and see what non profit organization in your area is in need of those supplies. Good luck!

Great question about art supplies - I'd check with your children's school to see if they can use them. Many schools are having a tough time with budget cuts and unfortunately it's the arts that seem to get cut first. If they don't need/want the supplies then ask around to your friends and neighbors as chances are they will know of a school or possibly even a day care that can use the supplies.

I know my the school my kids go to would love them!
