How often should I paint?

From a Feng Shui standpoint, are you supposed to choose the colors in your living space and stick with them? Or is change advocated?
Also, what about dramatic changes in color? My kitchen is yellow right now. But I'm thinking about painting it pale blue. Good idea? Bad idea?

    Hey Roger.

Great profile image by the way! Did you draw that? I love it.

Feng shui and paint... color is key to your mood and the feel of a space as well as heightening the type of energy you want to produce (ie: kitchen = hot flames, lots of chopping and concocting; bedroom = sleep, relaxation and intimacy). Light blue is my less enthusiastic pick for the kitchen, but might feel perfect for the bedroom.

In feng shui we also pick paint color based on inspiration from the bagua and the earth energies that it inspires: wood, metal, fire, water and earth. This can get more complicated, so I'd call your fave feng shui person for their input here.

In general, changing paint color can be a great way to get good, fresh juju into your home... and be a better match for how you're feeling and see yourself today vs 5 years ago when you were sporting that members only jacket.

So I say, paint away! Use NO VOC paint to treat yourself and the environment right and pick colors that get you stoked up to cook, play and relax... remember right color, right room energy.

Oh, one last tip, make sure all the colors you pick work well together as a palette, the energy will flow better from room to room if they do.

    Hi Roger,

I do not practice Feng Shui so I can not answer from that viewpoint. However as an interior designer my opinion is that change is good. As we grow and our life changes our tastes changes too, so it would make sense to keep up with those changes in your home. Paint is one of the easiest things to change and makes one of the biggest impacts. Also consider simple changes like switching out the pillows on your couch or even moving your art work around - sometimes it's the simplest changes that really make a room feel fresh.

Regarding dramatic changes in color - I'M ALL FOR IT!! GO FOR IT!!!

Your home is your sanctuary and should reflect who you are and how you feel.

Good luck and have fun with all the changes.

Yes! Paint away - I can only add the advice to get small samples or cans of your paint ideas and then paint about a 2' square swatch on the wall. Be sure you do TWO coats - or it may not really look like the finished product. Then live with that for a few days and see how the light in the room changes through the day and into the evenings.

    Enjoy!
