Are there any non-sweet cold and cough remedies?

When I get sick, the worst part isn't just the symptoms, it's having to drink cloying cough suppressants and suck on sickly sweet zinc drops and such. Are there any products that aren't so sugary? I take echinacea and the like but I'm talking about throat coats and such that will help me get through the night.

You want medicine that tastes like medicine! Unfortunately the conventional wisdom is that a "a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down" (to quote Mary Poppins) and that is unlikely to change. However there are some good teas out there that can be good for what ails you in such times, Traditional Medicinals is one company that makes some good ones. However, slippery elm bark and other natural components may not fit in with your desire to avoid the thick and coating action feel, but they are there to help you ultimately feel better. They make a good cough syrup also, by its very name is indeed thick and sweet, but you may find it a bit more palatable as it contains honey as a sweetener.

If it's a headcold, killing all the germs with salt water is the way to go if you don't feel like doing NyQuil shots for the next week:

It helps with allergies too, and I've found that if I flush my nasal passages early enough? The headcold might last as little as half a day and I'm feeling fine again. Gargling with salt water helps with sore throats too.

The only downside is that you learn all-too-intimately what drowning feels like. Basically, you're water boarding your cold to death.
