Free/Inexpensive ways to promote an event?

I'm looking for some "outside the box" free or cheap ideas on how to promote a local event to a 24-35 year old demographic, and I have about a month.

Your age range is actually a very broad demographic. What is the topic of the event specifically? What types of 24-35 year old people will be interested? More details will get you much better answers.

In any case, you've got to go fishing where the fish live. Facebook and Twitter are the absolute easiest ways to promote events for free, and people in that age range are heavy users. Find FB pages and Twitter accounts run and visited by people whose interests align with the event. Ask them to post the event for their fans/friends/followers, or post it in their wall/mention them in your tweets yourself. Just make sure that everyone who gathers to discuss the topic online knows about your event.

Does your topic generate blog activity? Contact the most popular bloggers on the subject and ask them to post about your event. Many local blogs offer community calendars, too- put your event in there!

That's about all I can recommend, given the limited info. You need to move quickly, though... 1 month is barely enough lead time to promote any event effectively.
