Help! My geriatric kitty keeps peeing in FRONT of the litterbox, not inside it. Is there any way to get him to do it IN the litterbox?

He doesn't seem unhappy or anything. I don't know why he's decided to go outside of the litterbox. :(

You probably don't want to hear this, but get him checked out by your vet. My geriatric kitty did the same thing, and it turned out she was diabetic. Once we got that under control with diet and insulin (thereby reducing the volume of pee to normal), she was back to peeing inside the box.

He may be getting too arthritic to get into the box anymore. Have you tried either a box with a really low entry, or making a ramp? (With my late lamented Yankee, I ended up using the bottom of a pet carrier as a litterbox, as the entry was very low to allow her to easily get in. That stopped her out-of-box peeing experiences.)

I agree with both answers... my geriatric kitty Suki had both kidney problems and bad arthritis and did exactly the same thing. It was like she wanted to be clean but couldn't quite make it in. I would definitely take your kitty to the vet... urinary problems can be very bad for male cats especially, as I learned with my most recent late kitty, Captain Jack.

It could also be a bladder infection or UTI.
