What should we do with McNeil Island? Now that the McNeil Island prison is closed, what should we do with the land? Though it was a State Prison, the land is owned by the Federal Government. I know the Special Commitment Center for DSHS Sex Offenders is still operating there, but I heard on KUOW this afternoon that the land is largely Deeded to the State Department of Corrections by the Feds, and what Uncle Sam giveth, Uncle Sam can taketh away. Suspend disbelief for a second and pretend we live in a democracy where our political leaders respond to the desires of the people. What should we do with McNeil Island? National Park? Wildlife Reserve? Casino resort? Native American cultural center? We the people own that island. What should we do with it? |
