Are any books beyond the first "Dune" novel worth reading?

Really enjoyed "dune" and don't want to spoil it if the sequels are no good.

I've read Messiah, which I thought was good. The Children of Dune miniseries came out before I got around to reading the book. I thought the miniseries was great, so I might not even bother reading the book.

The accepted wisdom among sci fi fans seems to be that the first three books are good; anything after that is crap and only gets worse as you get into the books written by Frank Herbert's son.

Someone asked a similar question 9 months ago - see here.

You can read my response (which got a shroom, I might add). My basic answer was "yes" they are worth reading, in my opinion. They are not bad, but they are nothing like the first Dune.

I doubt trying them would spoil Dune for you, you just might not finish them.

I will add, though, that I'm referring to Frank Herbert's books. The sequels by his son are suposed to suck, but I have not read them.

Yes! I've read nearly all of them, including the works finished by Herbert's son. If you think the story is interesting in Dune just wait and see what happens afterward, and before!

They aren't as good but probably worth reading a few. His other stuff though, I've only read some of his short fiction and the ConSentient novels but The Dosadi Experiment was great (worth reading Whipping Star first, it's short), and I should read some more!

I enjoyed the first three because it has the characters from the original, by God Emperor of Dune 3,500 years has passed so I never could get into it.
