Do people still get super dressed up for the opera?

My boyfriend and I will be going to the opera for the first time soon (to an evening performance on a Saturday), and I always wonder with stuff like this, with Seattle having a kind of anything-goes-anywhere-you-go dress code, will we be out of place if we dress to the nines?

Anything from jeans and flannel to a full tuxedo with patent-leather opera pumps for guys, jeans and flannel to brocaded evening gowns for ladies. People tend to be more flamboyant at the opera; I've seen fellows in plaid suits and gaggles of ten girls dressed almost as outlandishly as Dame Edna. Most people wear pretty boring business attire, but you are under no obligation to be boring. Rock it.

The only problem with a man wearing a tuxedo is that if you go out for drinks to a nice hotel bar before or after, people will come up to you and try to order from you.

You absolutely will not be out of place if you "dress to the nines." The opera is one of the last places in Seattle where you will find people in suits (and even on occasion tuxes). Part of the crowd will be casual but there will be a number of people in suits and evening gowns.

Yep, as answered below, while about half of the audience will be Seattle casual, the other half will be dressed up. Some pals and I LOVE getting a chance to wear our formal gowns again, but the few times we have done so at the 5th Ave (for example) we are the ONLY people in formal-wear, and there is lots of staring. Appreciative, but still, feels a bit awkward. But at the opera (and the ballet), a good 20% of the audience will be super fancy (it's great seeing some of the very senior members decked out in their finest, as well). Others in formal wear is ESPECIALLY true for the evening performances (matinees tend to be a bit more casual).

    Have great fun!

You are welcome to wear whatever you choose, but make sure to bring a wrap or sweater. It's a huge theater, 2800 seats, and they tend to pump the air conditioning to keep the air well circulated. Odds are, you'll be by a vent so be prepared!

You can pretty much do what you want. If you feel like dressing up fancy-schmancy, do it. You will not be alone. I usually just wear my nice jeans with a top and flats but that's just me and I don't like to dress up. Seattle has a great opera and I hope you have a wonderful time.

I like to get frocked up for the opera, for a number of reasons. As the others have said, the range of dress for audiences is huge, so put on something that makes you feel lovely and enjoy.

But, remember you will be sitting for around two hours, so make sure what you wear is ok for that.

I haven't been in years and years (not since they built the new opera house, if that gives you any idea), but from what I remember the people with the good seats seemed to be a lot more dressed up than us plebeians up in the nosebleeds. We ran into plenty of society-looking types in the lobby, but definitely no tuxedos sitting up in our immediate vicinity.
