Weird metallic smell

So. I made what should have been a fabulous lemon tart. Cooked lemon curd on a shortbread crust. I used a tart pan with a removable bottom. The shortbread tastes great, but the lemon curd has a really bad, weird metallic taste and smell.

Could the tart pan have caused this? I cooked the curd in a metal saucepan. What's going on here?

It's not the tart pan--it's the metal pan in which you cooked the curd. If it was a stainless pan, then either it's worn out or the coating was damaged and you need a new one. Try again using enamelware.

Lemons are acid enough that they can damage most metal pans over time, and heat accelerates that damage.

Or, did you use a metal spoon when you stirred the curd? That will do it, too. Enamelware and a wooden spoon are your friends.

Was the sauce pan cast iron? Acidic food should never be cooked in cast iron. I would use a stainless steel pan in the future.
